Erangel

Erangel, the first PUBG map, is not small – it can’t be, if it’s going to house hundreds upon hundreds of games over and over again – and even though it can feel like second nature at times, the ubiquitous design of the buildings, trees, and rolling battleground countryside are easy enough to get lost in.

There’s also the matter of finding the best landing locationfor your game, along with where to find the best vehicle locations if you’re caught a fair way from the safe zone, and generally the best place to start in PUBG.

PUBG Erangel map explained – Erangel size, details, and how to use the map to your advantage

The map in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is more complicated – and useful – than you might think, at least at first. Before we get into specific strategies, here’s the map itself, along with a few simple things worth knowing from the off:

1

PUBG Map key things to know:

  • Each large square represents 1 kilometre, and each smaller square within that is 100 metres, meaning the landmass of the map itself is actually only about 6km across.
  • The map is very detailed, but one or two structures don’t show up – most notable of these is the complex of underground bunkers, found in the sixth square from the left, fourth up from the bottom (or F4, for the cartographers out there).
  • Different areas have different spawn rates for weapons, vehicles, and loot – a lot of players will aready know this, but it’s worth remembering that you’re guaranteed a better quality of loot at set locations, and planning accordingly. More on how to make the most of this below!
  • Within those high loot-spawning areas, there are some specific locations which spawn high amounts of guns and weapons in particular, which are worth prioritising if you’re going to land in one of these high-risk zones.
  • You can glide around 1.25 kilometres (large squares) from the plane’s flight path (which is randomised in terms of direction but always linear) from the point your parachute automatically triggers, but with the new parachuting mechanics introduced in December 2018, you can now extend that massively by holding Control to ‘glide’ slowly, over long distances.
  • Markers can be dropped on the map with Right Mouse-Button, which are perfect for coordinating with a team or just keeping track of your own personal target destination, so use them as often as possible. The compass also uses specific numbers for more precise directional tracking, which should again be used for calling out enemy or point-of-interest locations with a team.

PUBG Erangel map best start locations, strategies, and where to land

Thanks to that randomised flight-path, there’s no definitive best place to start in PUBG. Instead, getting off to a good start is about making the most of the tools you have, planning quickly, and making some smart decisions with the knowledge that you have. Luckily, there are plenty of things to bear in mind which can help you do just that.

2

PUBG Erangel best start locations:

  • Military Base – you will almost always find the game’s best loot here, but likewise almost always the most people. If it’s under the flight path, expect to fight (and die). If not, it’s often worth a quick trek there in a vehicle to loot it in peace, but beware of bridge trolls (people waiting for you on bridges) if the white circle isn’t kind! The three big buildings in a U-shape house the best loot, but you’ll do well everywhere.
  • Mylta Power – if it’s on the edge of the flight path this is an excellent location. Top-level loot, especially in the main green building and surrounding warehouses, and enough for a full squad. Just beware you almost always need a vehicle to get to the first circle.
  • Small Mylta Power – just to the west of Mylta Power is another, smaller plant with one main building. You’ll find very high quality loot here, but in much smaller numbers, so it’s better for solo and duo than squads.
  • School and Hospital – both of these have huge amounts of loot, but at more of a mid-level in quality. School is currently the most popular place to land, so expect to almost always fight and die if you go there. The Hospital is a great shout it it’s right on the edge of your range.
  • Georgopol Crates – the large crates north of the mountains and south of the river, and their surrounding warehouses, have a large amount of very high-quality loot, but are often contested when reachable from the plane. If you can land nearby and drive there it’s a better bet, as combat can be tricky. Be sure to climb on top of the crates for the best loot, but beware you’re also very exposed!
  • Prison, Mansion, and Bunker – a trio of good quality, good sized places to loot, each has enough for a full squad, but each is also heavily contested when under the flight path. They make good destinations when you can get there safely though, or if you fancy yourself in a scrap.
  • Large towns – the likes of Novoreponye, Lipovka, Rozhok, Pochinki, Yasnaya Polyana, Georgopol, Primorsk, and Severny all make great places to loot, but are all dangerous. Look out for warehouses, cafés and restaurants (the glass-fronted, angular buildings), and churches for high concentrations of the best loot.

Miramar

The PUBG desert map Miramar is here for all platforms, after months of teases, screenshots, datamines and a debut on the test server way back when it was first announced in 2017.Matching the 8 by 8 kilometer setting of Battlegrounds’ original map Erangel, the Miramar map is a dusty biome with a mixture of vast plains, high story settlements, expansive desert and a coast surrounded by islands. Here on this page, we’ll be explaining everything you need to know about the map itself, plus our tips and advice on the best Miramar start locations and drop zones, general map info, and our own dedicated Miramar strategies for getting the most out of the desert map’s unusual terrain.

PUBG’s Miramar map explained – desert map size, cover, and general info

Now that Miramar’s been out in the wild for a while, we’ve become a much more intimate with its various quirks and and characteristics.

Here’s the map itself, before we dive into specifics:

PUBG’s desert map Miramar:

desert_1

Layout, size, setting, and cover

As you might have guessed, the desert map Miramar is set in the desert – or at least a fictional, sandy, central American biome. There’s a clear ‘Western’ vibe to it, with classic frontier weapons like the Winchester being introduced when it launched.

As far as its general characteristics go, the main thing to note about Miramar is that it’s open, far more so than the Erangel Map – although it’s open in a different way to what many people seem to think.

One of the main complaints players have had about Miramar is that it feels too open because of the lack of cover. That’s not necessarily true – there may be slightly less cover than Erangel, but more cover has been added in a recent patch – and we think that it’s more a case of Miramar feeling open because of the differences in line of sight that it has with Erangel.

The one thing that really sets the two apart is the excess of trees in Erangel. They provide pretty poor cover, but a handful of trees dotted around fairly open fields is enough to drastically alter line of sight to snipers and people scoping out the plains for crossing players.

Whilst Miramar might have plenty of cover that’s actually better at protecting you than trees, it’s the fact that you can see so far, and so clearly, that makes you feel so vulnerable when you’re traversing it.

In terms of size, Miramar’s actually the same size as Erangel, despite some believing it to be different – it’s an 8×8 grid of large squares, with each large square equalling one kilometre.

Miramar’s best start locations, drop zones and desert map strategies

As with Erangel – and any map in PUBG – the best starting locations for a given match are always going to depend on the situation – and how you like to play.

Generally though, if you’re out to win and not out to practise your combat or fool around, there are a number of things you’re always going to want: loot, safety, and an easy route to the safe zone.

Miramar best start locations and drop zones:

  • Hacienda – This is Miramar’s version of Erangel’s School; a smallish complex absolutely bursting with good loot, but also almost guaranteed to have other players there too, even if the plane’s path was nowhere near it and you got there as fast as you could. Survive the shootout and you’ll be one of the most well-kitted in the game.
  • Prison – Like Hacienda, this place has probably the best loot in the game. Unlike Hacienda, it’s less popular because it’s right in the corner of the map, meaning it’s only viable on occasion. The best time to go here is when the plane’s path is quite far away, but you can get close-ish on landing, and arrive within about a minute by vehicle. That way you normally get it to yourself, and have time to quickly book it to the safe zone after.
  • Casino at Pecado – The Pecado Casino is a bit like Erangel’s Hospital. A single, large-ish building filled with top-grate weapons and gear. It’s very central though, like Hacienda, which means it’s almost always in range of a parachute drop and therefore almost always full of people, so expect a shootout if you go.
  • Ladrilleria – A lesser-known gem that I hate to tell the world about, Ladrilleria normally has enough equipment for one or two players although it varies greatly with RNG. Sometimes there’ll be three M416s and level 2 armour, sometimes three Winchesters, depending on your luck. It’s normally quiet if it’s on the edge of parachute distance and is also close to another large town and some warehouses that you can progress to if needed.
  • Military Camp – Right in the top-right of the map this place is rarely in range of the drop, and often leads you stuck right at the far end of the map to the safe zone if you get bad luck with the RNG, but it’s full of great gear. The main issue is that it’s so spread out that it takes a long time to actually hoover it all up, but it’s great for squad play where you can afford to spread out a little yourselves.
  • Minas Generales – A bit like Ladrilleria, this place is rarely dense with other players, partly because it’s quite close to hot areas like Hacienda and Pecado which the masses tend to prefer. The various levels of the big machinery structures have lots of level 2-rated gear, and inside the multi-level buildings you’ll find a good range of weapons. Another one good for squads as it’s quite spread out again. Move into Graveyard, too, if you’re still short of one or two key items.

Sanhok

PUBG’s new 4×4 map Sanhok, previously known as Savage, is for players who’re up for a little more feisty a challenge than usual. Here on this page we’ve gathered together everything you need to know about the 4×4 PUBG map itself, including any new features like the tukshai ‘tuk-tuk’ vehicle, the new scooter, plus our tips for the best Sanhok start locations, and anything else you should know.

PUBG’s Sanhok map explained – size, new features and map differences

Here’s a quick-fire roundup of everything that’s new or different about the 4×4 map Sanhok.

sanhok_map

The most obvious point to make about it is that this new map is, of course, smaller than the other maps, like the 8×8 Erangel and Miramar and the newer 6×6 Vikendi. This one’s four by four kilometres, and the player count sticking to 100 per round.

Broadly speaking though, the main change to actual gameplay on Sanhok is the pace. Being half the size of Erangel and Miramar, Sanhok brings frantic early-game firefights, still a fairly quiet mid-game, and faster circles to hurry up the move to the late-game.

Here are the other, more specific changes that came with the map’s introduction to main servers in 2018:

  • Weather’s back! – contentious weather conditions like fog and rain have returned with Sanhok. They were unpopular at first, but the hardcore community has been after their return for some time, and we’re personally delighted to see them back and mixing up our playstyles once again.
  • There’s an Easter Egg location – We won’t spoil it, but it’s from a film, and it’s circular…
  • Weapon spawns – More gear spawns faster, in brief. Specifically, ARs, SMGs and DMRs are spawned more often, the item spawn rate is up by 5 per cent compared to round 4 of the Sanhok testing before it launch. Plus, 8x and 15x scopes don’t spawn at all on Sanhok, other than in care packages.
  • The circle now spawns instantly – no more anxious waiting period before you know where to go. The white circle now starts instantly, giving you an immediate idea of where you need to head next and how long you have.
  • Blue zone time adjusted – the blue zone is also now more “dynamic”, changing where the next circle is and the waiting time for it according to the number of players remaining in the game.
  • Red zone frequency has been lowered – The Red Zone is smaller on Sanhok, the centre of it will always appear outside of the white-ringed safe zone too, as it’s designed to make you more at risk outside of the circle.
  • Tweaks to vehicle spawns – Vans now spawn less often. The two-wheeled motorcycle spawns more often. Motorbikes with sidecars have been removed Sanhok. (Hooray!)

Sanhok start locations, strategies and where to land

sanhok_quarry
Can’t have a PUBG map without a quarry!

PUBG Sanhok best start locations

  • Camp Alpha, Bravo and Charlie – Three mini military bases can be found in similar positions in the east, west and south of the island, and they all play pretty much the same way: chaotic if there’s a direct flyover, a bit less chaotic if the plane’s further away. Note that loot’s just as good, if not better, on the structures’ roofs as it is inside.
  • Ruins – A really cool little maze of tunnels and rooms filled with high-grade (Level 3) loot. The surrounding pillars outside have some passable loot on them too if the middle’s too contested.
  • Mongnai – A nice little secret is this area in the very north-east corner of the map that looks like a coconut farm. We found a Level 3 vest and an M24 here in one visit. The loot is sparse, but high quality, and can be found throughout the plantation as well as in the handful of buildings.
mongnai
  • Paradise Resort and Bootcamp – Both are big, central, high-density areas and if you’ve played PUBG much you’ll know what that means. Absolute carnage, but lots of loot. Good for some warmup play or target practice, not so good for actually winning a round.
  • Docks – A smaller version of Erangel’s Novoporonye, the docks are full of climbable shipping containers with great loot on them – but beware it’s slow to traverse and leaves you rather exposed, although i’s been fairly quiet when we’ve dropped there so far.
  • Quarry – It wouldn’t be PUBG without a quarry, but actually this one’s flooded. Very high quality loot but it’s spread out. Great for a squad, look to the groups climbable rectangular blocks for the highest loot density, and beware the vantage points that look over you from all angles as you scavenge.
  • Mountaintop Ruins – A much smaller set of ruins that’s essentially one of those outdoor pillars and two small warehouse-shaped buildings. The loot is average but rarely contested, and it provides you with a brilliant vantage point from the highest part of the map. Just beware getting stuck in the cliffs as you try to descend!
mountain_ruins
  • Pontoons – The various shoreside pontoons (what we’re calling those little structures that jutt out to sea on little jetty-bridges) actually have some pretty decent loot, especially if you can scavenge through half a dozen of them and the buildings nearby alone. Just beware getting caught right out on the edge of the map when the blue zone starts to move in.

Tukshai, Scooters, and everything else we know about the 4×4 map

Just like Miramar when that was still new, Sanhok has some new goodies with it.

The SLR, a DMR that takes both AR and DMR attachments, was added across the game when Sanhok launched, but Sanhok also has an exclusive weapon called the QBZ, a fully automatic AR that uses 5.56mm rounds and looks a lot like the AUG A3 you can find in care packages.

qbz

It holds 30 rounds per mag, extended up to 40, and replaces the SCAR-L in the item pool, meaning the SCAR-L won’t spawn at all on Sanhok (it also spawns about 1.4x as often as the SCAR-L did).

PUBG_Scooter

Otherwise, Sanhok has a couple of exclusive vehicles as well as those weapons – such as the Scooter and the late addition of the Tukshai – a cross between a Tuk-Tuk and a Rickshaw, depending what you usually call it – at last!

Vikendi

PUBG’s snow map, Vikendi, is live now on PC, and is coming soon to the live servers of PlayStation and Xbox console versions. It’s an interesting one, sitting in the mid-size territory between the smaller Sanhok and larger Erangel and Miramarmaps, and it brings some new mechanics and strategic elements like footprints with it, too. Here, we’ll run through some early suggestions for the best snow map start locations as well as some snow map strategies that we’ve picked up from our time with it in testing – with some more Vikendi tips and tricks added now we’ve tried it out on live servers.

PUBG snow map Vikendi explained – map size, footprints and details

Vikendi, PUBG’s new “snow map”, mixes up the formula of regular maps like Erangel and Miramar, with it slotting into a new, medium size between those larger maps and the more recent, pocket-size Sanhok. Here’s a look at the map itself before we dive into specifics.

pubg_snow_map_vikendi

Snow Map Vikendi size, footprints, new parachuting and other new detail

Vikendi is a 6×6 map, plonking it firmly between the 4×4 kilometre map of Sanhok and the 8×8 kilometre Erangel and Miramar ones as we noted above. In effect, it’s designed to play like a hybrid of the two sizes, too: a little faster than the two large ones but a little more ‘tactical’ than Sanhok, and in practise that’s largely the case.

The other main Vikendi-specific feature to note is the addition of footprints, which seem pretty insignificant but can, in some cases, make a real difference to your approach. They’re essentially the open doors of the wilderness, if you want to sound poetic – or in other words they’re an indicator that someone has been there recently. They last for ten minutes as one keen player

pubg_snow_map_vikendi_4

There are changes to vehicles on Vikendi, too: regular vehicles, including four-wheel-drives like the Jeep, will struggle in snow, particularly when going up-hill, and will slide around a little when trying to steer – which is fun! That’s mitigated by the introduction of a new vehicle, the Snowmobile, which is a rather gorgeous two-seater that handles much better on snow, but much worse on regular terrain like roads and regular ground.

The final big addition is a change to parachuting, which applies to all maps with the arrival of Vikendi on live servers. Instead of only having control of your direction when ‘chuting – and an ability to ‘swing’ your way to a little extra distance – parachuting is changing to allow you to descend quicky, by holding Shift, or to glide, allowing you to maintain height and move slowly over longer distances, by holding Control.

pubg_vikendi_snowmobile

This means that almost the entire Vikendi map is available from the off on almost any flyover route, but you’ll of course be landing much later than your opponents if you choose to glide over a long distance. Regular parachuting has also had a slight reduction in distance, it seems, and so faced with a tradeoff between quicker access to loot on the ground versus safer looting with a later landing, most players are still sticking to close-to-the-fly-zone drops in central areas. Or at least they are for now.

PUBG snow map strategies and the best start locations on Vikendi so far

It’s still very early days for the snow map Vikendi, and the way the map’s loot is spread out is an indication of that. There’s some very unusual spawn distribution – a huge percentage of standard spawn weapons right now are SMGs and Shotguns, for instance, along with lots of the same DMR attachments despite their near non-existence – making it a little too early to properly lay out the best starting locations as we have done in our guides to Erangel, Miramar and Sanhok.

There are also questions over some accidental weighting of the circle, as it seems to be spawning in the central south-west area a little over-regularly at the moment.

Rather than breaking them down into loot quality and quantity tiers then, for now we’ll run through a quick list of some of the map’s key locations and give a general idea of what you can expect, and update this page with that loot-spawning info with much greater depth as the map moves from Test Server to live games in the near future.

PUBG snow map start locations – the main areas

  • Hot drops – The busiest spots to land on Vikendi are, like on the other maps, the main named locations in the centre of the map, thanks to their ability to be reached from just about any flight path. Think eye-catching spots like Dino Park, Castle, Villa, Coal Mine, and Mount Kreznic. There’s generally a high concentration of loot at all of these, but we’ll have to wait and see on how that equates to quality. We’ve had the most success finding level 3 gear – including helmets – at Dino Park, particularly in the dodgems arena!
pubg_snow_map_vikendi_1
  • Big but quiet – Similarly eye-catching areas but further from the centre of the map, you’ll have a quieter time at areas around the edge of the map like Cantra, Milnar, Cosmodrome, Winery, Dobro Mesto, Krichas, Peshkova and Movatra. Loot concentration still seems to be very high here, so a long drop to one of these may be a good option, especially with those aforementioned changes parachuting mechanics.
pubg_snow_map_vikendi_2
  • Smaller and quieter – Abbey seems to be a hidden gem, with a large amount of loot in a fairly small area, that’s often overlooked. Otherwise smaller settlements around the edges of the map, like Vihar, Trevno, Pilnec and so on are what we’re talking about here. Still plenty of loot for one, but less suitable for larger squads, and you may well face a bit of a trek to somewhere relevant. Situational options, then!
pubg_snow_map_vikendi_3
The Abbey’s a bit of a hidden gem, although maybe not for long.

As we mentioned above, we’ll be looking at these in more detail in the coming days and weeks, and will circle back to update with some more detail as the slightly strange loot situation settles down.
